Wartime poetry, French musical delight
1 min read

A WORLD War I tragedy with a distinctly country South Australian flavour and a melodic French music odyssey will delight audienes in different ways at this year’s Gawler Fringe.

Of Auburn and Jacques and Madeleine will both be performed at the Gawler Civic Centre on Sunday, March 6.

Of Auburn premiered as part of the Auburn French Festival in the Clare Valley last spring to critical and audience acclaim,

It was written by Steven Oppes of Les Flaneurs Volants and co-produced with band mate Jean-Marc Spiler.

The show follows the narration of Great War nurse Madge Yeatman and the life and war poetry of Auburn-born C.J. Dennis.

Featuring Clare Mansfield and Nic Conway, the production combines theatre, poetry, personal testimony, live music and immersive audio-visual technology to tell the stories of the women of World War I and Dennis.

Later in the afternoon, you can follow Les Flaneurs Volants’ character Jacques in the final instalment of their trilogy Jacques and Madeleine, backed by French, Quebecois and Cajun songs.

Audiences will find out what Jacques has learnt of love and life through song and story, evoking emotions from French music and reinterpretations of well-known English language songs.

The ensemble comprises singer Spiler, accordionist/keyboardist Oppes, guitarist John Denlay, bassist Ian Davis, saxophone and clarinet player Nick Jones and drummer Lewis Todd.

Of Auburn will be performed at Gawler Civic Centre on March 6 at 1pm.

Jacques and Madeleine will be at Institute Hall at Gawler Civic Centre on March 6 at 4.15pm.

Tickets to both shows can be bought on the Adelaide fringe website at adelaidefringe.com.au
